Selecting Correlated Random Actions
نویسنده
چکیده
In many markets, it can be beneficial for competing firms to coordinate their actions. However, such arrangements usually have the problem that nobody has an incentive to adhere to the agreement. In this paper we investigate a way for two companies to communicate together and agree on a coordinated strategy in such a way that both participants have an incentive to keep to the agreement. We provide a more efficient solution to the game theoretic problem solved by Dodis, Halevi and Rabin in [DHR00]: two selfish rational parties want to select one of a list of pairs, according to some probability distribution, so that one party learns the first element and the other learns the second, and neither gains any other information. In game theory terms, the problem is to achieve a correlated equilibrium without the trusted mediator. Our solution is more efficient than [DHR00] in terms of the probability distribution.

Best Action Selection in a Stochastic Environment
We study the problem of selecting the best action from multiple candidates in a stochastic environment. In such a stochastic setting, when taking an action, a player receives a random reward and affords a random cost, which are drawn from two unknown distributions. We target at selecting the best action, the one with the maximum ratio of the expected reward to the expected cost, after exploring...
متن کاملActivity in Posterior Parietal Cortex Is Correlated with the Relative Subjective Desirability of Action
Behavioral studies suggest that making a decision involves representing the overall desirability of all available actions and then selecting that action that is most desirable. Physiological studies have proposed that neurons in the parietal cortex play a role in selecting movements for execution. To test the hypothesis that these parietal neurons encode the subjective desirability of making pa...
متن کاملPower Control and Rate Adaptation as Stochastic Games for Random Access
In this paper, we address the random access problem from the perspective of a stochastic game. We allow selfish as well as cooperative users to select their retransmission strategies depending on several performance requirements, which involve throughput, delay and transmission costs. We first consider a simple slotted collision channel with packet capture capabilities in the presence of multip...
متن کاملSpline Smoothing With Correlated Random Errors
Spline smoothing provides a powerful tool for estimating nonparametric functions. Most of the past work is based on the assumption that the random errors are independent. Observations are often correlated in applications; e.g., time series data, spatial data and clustered data. It is well known that correlation greatly a ects the selection of smoothing parameters, which are critical to the perf...
متن کاملGlobal Bandits
Standard multi-armed bandits model decision problems in which the consequences of each action choice are unknown and independent of each other. But in a wide variety of decision problems – from drug dosage to dynamic pricing – the consequences (rewards) of different actions are correlated, so that selecting one action provides information about the consequences (rewards) of other actions as wel...
